First off, a huge thank you to everyone for their love and support in the opening of my Etsy shop! If you haven’t had a chance yet, you can check out always, by amber here for all things wedding (yes, shameless plug). Now onto today’s post – taking it from wedding to babies! My oldest and dearest friend is pregnant (with a baby girl!) — and for the past few months, her mom, another good friend and myself were busy planning her surprise  baby shower. Now that the shower went off without a hitch, I’m super excited to finally be able to share some of the DIY elements of it with you — starting with one of the gifts I made! As I was trying to think of what to get her, I decided I wanted to get her some books to start off the little one’s library, so I came up with the idea of a DIY baby book crate to put them in (matching the nursery colours and theme of course – purple and grey, with owls!)

What you’ll need:

  • Crate – I got mine at Michael’s
  • Cardstock/Scrapbook paper
  • Ribbon
  • Hole punch
  • Adhesive spray
  • Cricut – Create a Critter, Pretty Pennants and Plantin Schoolbook cartridges
  • Grey paint

How I made it:

First I painted the crate grey (two coats). While this was drying, I used my Cricut machine to cut out three layers for the banner – 2.5″ outer, 2″ middle and 1.7″ outer using the Pretty Pennants cartridge. Then I cut out the letters using Plantin Schoolbook – 1″ shadow. I would’ve used the baby’s name, but they’re keeping the same a secret for now, so I used ‘Bean’ instead – the baby’s nickname! I also made an owl using the Create a Cricut cartridge (2.5″). Then using adhesive spray, I assembled each panel, as well as the owl.

Using a hole punch, I punched two holes in the top of each panel and wove long strips of thin purple ribbon through them. Then I adhered the ribbon to each of the sides of the crate and used another ribbon (tied it in a bow) to cover the ends of the banner ribbon. I then adhered the owl to the top right hand side. And voila – the perfect little crate to start the baby’s library! I must admit, shopping for baby books was way too much fun, and such a trip down memory lane!

So, what’s YOUR favourite baby shower gift you’ve ever made?! I’d love to see it, link up in the comments below! More DIY baby shower goodness to come :)
